The announcement on social networks by Philisiwe Sibiya, managing director of MTN Cameroon, has gone almost unnoticed since May 23, but the fact is that since that time the telecom company has launched the withdrawal of money without credit card in the ATMs of the Cameroonian subsidiary of Société Générale (SGC).
The process according to the telecom company would be simple. The MTN Mobile Money customer visits an SGC ATM with the “MTN Mobile Money” signal. On the ATM screen, he/she selects “cardless“, then “MTN Mobile Money“. The user enters his/her telephone number and follows the instructions. He/she receives a notification on their mobile phone asking to enter the PIN to validate the transaction. The operation is completed.
The charges for withdrawals from SGC’s ATMs, the telecom company explains, are the same as those charged for the usual transactions on the telephone. The user can withdraw the minimum amount of 5000 FCFA and the maximum is 500 000 FCFA. Currently, 37 ATMs are available, from which customers can withdraw their Mobile Money.
With the launch of the cashless credit card withdrawal service, MTN is challenging its competitor Orange Cameroon who, in December 2016, had developed a similar service but this time with a Visa card Usable in all ATMs.
