25,000 asylum applications are filed in the UK every year. Roughly 40% are successful. An asylum seeker will get about £5 a day to live off from the government. Most asylum seekers are not allowed to work.
So what is life like for them? 5 Live’s Stephen Nolan has been speaking to Pride Agbor from Cameroon.
Pride says his life will be in danger if he returns to his home country because he is associated with an anti-government group. He suffered beatings at the hands of the Cameroon police. A few weeks ago the Home Office tried to send him back.
Pride was arrested, and told by the Home Office that he would be forcibly removed from the UK. His removal was deferred, and he’s currently on bail, living in Sheffield.
