Cameroon – AFCON 2019: Towards a clash between Biya and the northerners?

Written by Deckson N.

Projects planned in Garoua, the regional capital of the North, including the rehabilitation of the Roumdé Adja stadium and the construction of a 4-star hotel, in view of the next African Cup of Nations which Cameroon will host in 2019, are at a standstill.

Unlike other cities, such as Douala (Littoral), Yaoundé (Center), Limbe (South-West) chosen to host the teams that will qualify for the next AFCON 2019, Garoua in the North, Is not yet at the award stage of the contract.

An accusing finger is pointed at Paul Bell, deputy director of sports facilities and equipment, at the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education (Minsep), also cousin of Bidoung Mpkatt, minister in charge of the ministerial department aroused.

In the commission dedicated to the awarding of contracts for the construction of the AFCON infrastructures, the voice of the Minsep is preponderant. Indeed, the presidency of the republic, can not award a market without a favorable opinion of the Minsep.

Aware of this situation, Paul Bell, plays his position to ransom and delay for as long as possible the execution contracts of the AFCON 2019, we learn from an internal source in the Minsep, having strongly requested anonymity.

Approached, the source did not wish to receive us.

All this is not without counterpart. Cameroon is only 5 months away from the visit of the inspectors of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), for a first evaluation mission.

What miracle will Cameroon do, so that the Grand North, succeed in the feat of hosting a single pool of the competition?

The Grand North (Adamaoua, North, Far North), therefore, appears to be wronged in comparison with other regions, to accommodate the various groups of the competition, whether in hotel infrastructures or stadia, like the Japoma stadium On the side of Douala (Littoral) whose contract has already been awarded.

If, at the domestic level, the delay of the AFCON works in the North can lead to a clash between Biya,  who is firm on his  AFCON project, and the northerners on the other side, Cameroon could pay a high price. The aberrations of Paul Bell, who, according to anonymous sources, is stuck in corruption, ransoming and retrieving commissions before any award of the AFCON to Garoua.
