Cameroon – Paul Biya: President receives a gold medal in recognition of his actions in favor of culture and the development of higher education in Cameroon

The decision to award the honorary distinction to the Head of State of Cameroon was made at the end of a session of the IURC, which was attended by the rectors of Cameroonian universities (Maroua, Douala, Buea, Dschang, Bamenda , Yaoundé 1 and Yaoundé 2).

The award ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Rome-based University of Rome Tor Vergata, a ceremony for the awarding of the Gold Medal of the Italian University Rectors’ Conference (IURC). Founded in 1972, it is one of the leading Italian universities, renowned for its excellence in teaching economics, medicine and engineering, especially for the quality of its professors.

It was the thesis room of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata that served as the framework for this solemn ceremony which was attended by, besides the official sequel of the Head of State, Members of the Cameroonian community in Italy and many Cameroonian students in training in Italian universities, “reported Cameroon Tribune in its edition of this Thursday, March 23, 2017.

According to the newspaper, the arrival of Paul Biya, accompanied by his wife Chantal Biya at 4 pm marked the beginning of this solemn ceremony highly scientific. After the execution of the national anthems of Cameroon and Italy by the Glorious Voices, the Choir of the University of Yaounde I, Professors Gaetano Manfredi and Giuseppe Novelli, respectively president of the IURC and rector of the University of Rome Vergata took the floor to pay tribute to Paul Biya’s many contributions to the development and promotion of culture and education.

Professor Vittorio Colizzi, Director of the UNESCO Chair at the University of Rome Vergata, was responsible for drawing up the achievements of President Paul Biya in the fields of culture and higher education.

The speaker recalled in a non-exhaustive way the organization in 1991 of the General States of Culture which marked the path of cultural roots in Cameroon, the creation of the Ministries of Arts and Culture and of Education The holding of the General States of Education in 1996 and the 1993 university reform which gave birth to 08 state universities today and to more than 100 private higher education institutions. According to the academic, the organization of arts and culture festivals on a regular basis, the setting up of two funds to support cultural policy and university research, are important for the promotion of culture and development of higher education, “reports the tabloid.

On receiving this special medal, the Head of State of Cameroon expressed his gratitude to the rectors of the Italian universities for this high mark of attention. Visibly touched by this distinction, Paul Biya points out that this medal honors the entire Cameroonian people. For the recipient of the day, Cameroon will continue to promote culture and education to better “our living together,” we learn.
