Cameroon – AFCON 2017: El Hadj Diouf, Roger Milla and Gérémi Njitap react to Cameroon’s qualification for the semi-finals

The three former glories of the African football globally salute the strength of character that the Indomitable Lions showed during the game against Senegal won after the penalty shootout (5-4)

El hajj Diouf: “Africans must learn from the Cameroon team”

It’s football. Maybe there are teams that are not made to win the penalty but I must first congratulate our Cameroonian friends and as I always called them, the “fetishists“. They showed that the fetishists were better than the marabouts (laughter). It was a match between me and my friends Patrick Mboma, Roger Milla, Gérémi, Bill Tchato … It was a game between us. I think that all Africans must learn from this team because it gives a serenity, it plays in team and they showed that they are not stars that win the matches but it is a team that wins a football match.

Gérémi Njitap: “We have always been mentally strong”

We are very satisfied, first for this young group and then for all the Cameroonians who doubted their team. Today we have one game left to reach the final. I guess the guys are going to give it all. We do not need any more calculations. We must do everything now to go to the final.

We have a very young band, today we do not have a star on the team. These are 23 kids who know what they want and we are at their side to frame them. Since the start of the competition, they have performed very well. We knew that today’s game was going to be a physical match. You have noticed that there are many wounded on the Senegal side and that is the strength of Cameroon. And then, it was going to be mental because it was necessary to be very strong mentally to succeed these sessions of the penalties. We have always been mentally strong. You know, after 120 minutes of matches, you have to go and get the mental resources. And that’s what counted. The whole thing is not really to know how to draw the penalties but everything happens in the head and the Cameroonians are very strong mentally.

Roger Milla: “We will continue with these kids until the end”

I think that the children have applied exactly the instructions given to them, we are very proud of them because they are demonstrating that in football, when you want to do well, when you are Enthusiastic, when you want to win, you can do it.

For now, for me, Ondoa is the best player of this African Cup until things keep going. We go to the coronation. It should be noted that when Cameroon already exceeds the quarter-finals, they are difficult to beat. We have overtaken these quarter-finals, we will continue with these kids until the end.
