The staff of the State of Cameroon will swallow an amount of 998.5 billion FCFA in 2017 out of a total budget of 4373.8 billion FCFA. Almost one quarter of the budget.
Compared to the fiscal year 2016 when the government spent 955.2 billion to pay the salaries of public servants, there is an increase in the expenditure of the State personnel to the amount of 43.3 billion FCFA. “This increase, according to the Law of Finance, is to be highlighted with the taking in charge of new teachers leaving the ENS, as well as students of big schools, recruitments announced in the armed forces and police“.
In the same vein, the Finance Act 2017 stipulates that the spending pocket devoted to paying the wages of state agents will continue to experience inflation because in 2018 it is expected that the envelope of this sector will pass to 1053.9 billion FCFA. And in 2019, it will be 1112.7 billion FCFA.
The civil service has grown rapidly from 2006 to 2012, according to report of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), carried out in 2014 on Cameroon. The number of civil servants has increased from 167,000 to 250,000, an increase of 6.9 per cent per year, while the average annual increase in the population is estimated at 2.5 per cent.
