Cameroon – Bird Flu: 50,000 fowls killed in Bafoussam in a month

The action is from the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA) to fight the disease.

A new outbreak of the H5N1 virus was discovered recently in a farm in the town of Bafoussam, the capital of the Western Region. That is why officials of the divisional delegation of MINEPIA for the Mifi undertook to slaughter the livestock.

But during the descent of 14 September 2016, they had trouble with the manager of a farm that had 17 000 fowls. The livestock belonged to a retired soldier who strongly opposed the slaughter of poultry. MINEPIA officers had to turn back. It is finally on September 21 that the livestock was destroyed.

The numbers of killed fowls in a month in the Mifi division are impressive. “It is estimated that 50,000 fowls have been killed in the Mifi division, since the beginning of September. Everything restarted on Saturday, September 3, 2016. That day, between 1,500 and 2,000 dead fowls were incinerated in the farm of Mr. André Richard Ouembé. The next day, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, a new descent of logging crews allowed to shorten over 5000 other lives. And gradually, the stock of 30 000 subjects had been decimated, “says the newspaper.

Poultry farmers hope a rapid remedy to this epidemic which has already caused hundreds of millions of FCFA loss within months.
