Cameroon – Energy: New disruptions on the domestic gas distribution market

Written by Deckson N.

Despite the calm observed between the company Tradex and SCTM, the leader in the domestic gas distribution in Cameroon, who owes over FCfa 4 billion in debt to the former; serenity has not really come back to the domestic gas market in Cameroon.

Indeed, some resellers claim that they have not been supplied for several weeks now, thus confirming the complaints of customers in the country’s capital city, sometimes forced to check several warehouses to purchase a 12.5 Kg cylinder.

This situation can be explained by the continuing treasury difficulties of SCTM, who controls about 40% of the market, and the temporary suspension of gas cylinder deposit operations at Tradex, subsidiary of SNH which is quickly becoming a major player on the domestic gas market in Cameroon since its entry on this market in 2013.

As a reminder, the domestic gas demand in Cameroon officially increases by 8% on average every year, while the local production is both stagnating and insignificant, forcing the country to meet 80% of its needs through imports.
