Cameroon – UY I: 3 teachers sanctioned for sexual harassment

The Rector of the University of Yaounde I, Prof. Maurice Aurélien Sosso took these decisions at the Disciplinary Board which was held on May 27, 2016.

Professor Njiale Pierre Marie, lecturer and teacher at the Faculty of Arts, Letters and Human Sciences (FALSH), has been translated to the Disciplinary Board for sexual harassment. He was convicted of “sexual harassment” on a student, and had a 4-year ban.

According to the newspaper Le Soir on Wednesday, June 8, 2016, he was trapped by his student through a telephone recording. His suspension runs until 2018 with today obligation to respect professional ethics until the lifting of the ban. Then Professor Temdjim, Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (FMSB) is also suspended for similar offenses.

The third teacher suspended is Dr. Fridolin Nke, Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the FALSH. He is accused of attempting to abuse one of his students. While asking for a service as a senior teacher from the girl on a thesis about a Belgian author, the teacher “will wanted to weave a cobweb in order ‘to catch his prey for purposes other than academic orientation, “wrote the newspaper.

Many cases reported previously had not led to sanctions because different Rectors had their own reasons. Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi, arrived as Secretary General of the University of Yaounde I had launched a real battle against this scourge by writing a book entitled “Sexual Harassment and academic ethics.”
