Cameroon – Bird Flu: Virus hits the Western Region!

Samples taken from chickens tested positive for Bayangam and Bafoussam, two cities in western Cameroon.

Samples taken on June 2 at the farm of the paramount chief of Bayangam in Kung-Chi division, Western Region – presented by specialists as the first poultry Basin of the country, were positive.

At least 1,500 chickens have died in several markets of the Western region. Samples taken and analyzed in Yaounde have detected bird flu in Bafoussam in the Mifi and Bayangam in the Kung-chi.

Accordingly, the boss of the region decided to proceed to the eradication/slaughtering of fowls, followed by incineration and prohibiting the marketing of chicken in the West.

Fearing the economic consequences of this announcement, the poultry farmers have demanded some indemnifications.

After the regional capital of the Center, Yaounde, where the bird flu was detected there over a week, it is now the western region of the country where the number of chicken stock is estimated to 7,000,000, and a billion eggs per year, which is now contaminated.
