After the Cameroonian footballer Patrick Ekeng who died in Romania during a football match, followed by Jeanne Christelle Djompnang who died during a warm up session for a match of the national women’s first division championship of football, followed again by the death of David Mayebi, an administrator of the FECAFOOT and well before, François ASSONG, former football referee, it is now the turn of the young cyclist Yannick Lontsi Yemeli.
A member of the SNH Velo Club of Yaounde and a Cameroonian international, he died this Sunday, May 29, 2016, around 7am at the Yaounde Central Hospital. He did not survive his injuries, after suffering a fall last Saturday at a national night race held in Mvog Ada neighborhood in Yaounde by the Cameroon Cycling Federation.
“There were two series. The riders were at the last series before the final sprint. A mad woman entered into the circuit. Captain Fouda, head of the security, crossed to remove the mad woman, he was caught by a group of runners in which was Lontsi. Everybody fell. There were injuries but only the case of Lontsi was very serious because he hit his head on the ground. On Sunday morning, we received the sad news saying he passed away, “recounts Jacques Kuissi, former athlete of the Cameroon cycling and staff at the Cameroon Cycling Federation. The competition was interrupted.
Aged 27, Yannick Lontsi was among the best Indomitable Lions of cycling. He has been several times stage winner at the Grand Prix Chantal Biya of Cameroon and champion of Cameroon.
This is the first time a Cameroonian cyclist dies during or shortly after a competition.
