The national football team, the Indomitable Lions are back in the country after a brilliant participation at the 2017 African Cup of Nations in Gabon.
Fans gave the team a rousing reception in the nation’s capital on Monday following their 2-1 victory over the Pharoahs of Egypt at the finals of the tournament in Libreville on Sunday despite the absence of some star players including Liverpool defender Joel Matip, Schalke04 striker Eric Choupo-Moting and West Brom’s Allan Nyom refused the coach’s call-up for the tournament.
Thousands of fans and supporters of the team rushed to the Nsimalen International airport Monday morning to receive their darling and the coveted trophy which the Indomitable Lions lifted for the fifth time.
The victory euphoria however almost turned morose following a delay of the flight transporting the team back from Libreville to Yaounde. Earlier scheduled to alight before midday, the hired Camair-co plane finally touched down at the airport at 4:15pm. Team officials said the delay was prompted by bad weather.
The crowd of supporter began pouring out praises on team captain, Benjamin Moukandjo and mates as soon as the former brandished the golden trophy at the foot of Camir-co aircraft Beoing 737.
Beaming with smiles, the players high-fived some of the fans as they made their way into the VIP lounge of the airport where some members of government including the ministers of Youth Affairs, Communication and Transport had been waiting to receive them.
The team then took off to town driving between several other flag-waving fans who lined up along the road from the airport to the city centre cheering the team and singing and singing “Egypt in our soup, Egypt in our soup.”
The president of the Republic and wife, Mrs Chantal Biya will offer a reception at the Unity Palace on Wednesday in honour of the team.
Hugo Broos and his boys had earlier received a special bonus of 100 million FCFA from the head of state in prelude to the finals.
