Seven players seized Hugo Broos to indicate that they will not play the AFCON in Gabon between January 14 and February 5, 2017. Here is the statement of the coach of the Cameroon team for this purpose.
The national team coach, the Indomitable Lions, wishes to inform the public of the following: Of the 35 players pre-selected for the AFCON 2017, seven seized the coach on the phone to indicate their unavailability. Discussions with stakeholders revealed the following:
1- André Onana (from Ajax Amsterdam): His club having the Dutch national team goalkeeper (Piet KRUL) André Onana prefers to decline the offer of Cameroon and stay in the club to preserve his place of titular.
2- Guy Roland Ndy Assembe (Nancy): His contract with Nancy expires in June 2017. Ndy Assembe therefore prefers to remain in the club and to preserve his place of incumbency to negotiate at the appropriate time, in a position of strength, a new contract .
3- Joël Matip (Liverpool): He does not want to play with the Indomitable Lions for the moment, due to a bad experience with the previous technical staff.
4- Allan Nyom (West Bromwich): He prefers to remain in the club to preserve his place.
5- Maxime Poundje (Bordeaux): He chose to play for France.
6- André Zambo Anguissa (Olympique Marseille): He prefers to remain in the club and to preserve his place of titular.
7- Ibrahim Amadou (Lille OSC): He prefers to stay in the club preserving his place of titular.
As can be seen, these players want to privilege their personal interest to the detriment of the national selection in which they have already for some evolved. The Cameroon Football Federation reserves the right to take actions against these players in accordance with FIFA regulations.
However, the national coach wants to reassure the opinion that he will put in place the best team possible with players motivated and determined to defend the colors of Cameroon. The list of 23 players selected for the AFCON 2017 as well as the preparation program will be made public as soon as possible.
