In Cameroon, in the old days, wealthy men were called Sohaing André, Fotso Victor, Kadji Defosso. In recent years, Forbes Africa Magazine, which publishes an annual ranking of the continent’s biggest fortunes, revealed the new rich Cameroonians named Paul Fokam Kammogne, Samuel Foyou, Colin Mukete, Jean Samuel Noutchoguoin, Sylvestre Ngouchinghe, Nana Bouba or Baba Ahmadou Danpullo, presented as the richest man in French-speaking Africa south of the Sahara.

But in its new edition, which is already on the newsstand, number 40 from December 2016 to January 2017, the famous magazine makes a new revelation: Mrs. Kate Kanyi Tometi Fotso, widow of André Fotso, former president of the Inter-employer grouping of Cameroon (GICAM) who died four months ago, is the richest woman in Cameroon with a fortune valued at 252 million dollars, or about 114 billion FCFA.

Ranked 20th, this rich Cameroonian enters history as the first woman to be among the 30 biggest fortunes of Francophone Africa south of the Sahara. Unlike men who have amassed their wealth in banking, telecoms, real estate, agro-industry, the only woman in the Top 30 is a Cocoa exporter, boss of the trading company Telcar Cocoa Ltd.

In the ranking of the largest fortunes in Africa, the leader is named Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian national whose wealth is estimated at 12, 9 billion dollars. In the francophone Africa subregion, the Cameroonian Baba Danpullo, part of the Le Coq Rouge group, which is also in the agro-industry, is the richest, with 940 million Dollars. He is followed by George Forrest, a Belgian born in the Democratic Republic of Congo who has a fortune of 800 million dollars and the Cameroonian banker Paul Fokam Kammogne occupies the third step of the podium with 690 million dollars.
