The number of people dead in the locality of Mindourou in eastern Cameroon following the consumption of adulterated alcohol called “Odontol” rose from 14 to 21 Tuesday.
The victims, originating from seven surrounding villages had consumed on Monday this traditional alcohol provided by the usual deliveryman according to the Governor of the Eastern Region, Gregory Mvongo.
In addition, according to the administrative authority, an additional 10 people were in intensive care at the Abong-Mbang district hospital in the Haut Nyong division, where a medical team from this health district is currently deployed to Mindourou to identify all potential victims. An awareness-raising team also explains to residents the dangers of using traditional alcohol.
“The health teams have taken samples of the bodies and what remains of the containers to determine the exact causes of this tragedy,” reassures Dr. Robert Mathurin Bidjang, regional delegate of the Ministry of Public Health of the East.
According to the first elements of the police investigation, everything consisted of drinking this drink in the Nkouak village and its surroundings where people celebrated various family and festive ceremonies (marriage, funeral, etc.) as a result of the Cocoa harvest.
