The locality of Nindourou in the Haut-Nyong division is currently suffering mourning and consternation.
14 people were killed last Saturday in the locality of Mindourou, a Commune of the Haut-Nyong division, in the Eastern Region. It was after consuming a local adulterated whiskey commonly known as “odontol” that the drama occurred. This drink had, however, been delivered to them by a regular merchant.
“A few hours after consuming this whiskey, some consumers lose their sight, develop hallucinations and died. There are now 14 deaths and two survivors, one of whom was taken to the Abong-Mbang district hospital and the other still under observation, “the local correspondent of the CRTV said on Monday.
According to the Regional Delegate of the Public Health of the East, Dr. Robert Maturin Bidjang, the clinical observation carried out reveals alcohol poisonings. Currently, a medical team lists all those who have consumed this adulterated alcohol for a fast care. Samples were also taken for in-depth analysis in a reference hospital.
This alcoholic craft made from corn has often done in havoc among poor Cameroonian people. In 2014, six people were killed in the Mayo-Danai division after consumption of this whiskey.
