The President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) will represent Equatorial Guinea who have decided to attack France before the International Court of Justice.
Maurice Kamto is a politician. In Cameroon, he created in August 2012 his own party, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM), a political party that aims to build with Cameroonians, a new country emptied of its ills, including corruption and embezzlement of public funds.
But now, the former Minister Delegate to the Minister of Justice is also an international lawyer with established reputation. And in this context, he is led to even defend causes which a at first seems contrary to the ideology of his party. Maurice Kamto is indeed the lawyer of Equatorial Guinea in the case of ill-gotten gains.
A case in which the French justice accuses Teodorin Obiang, vice president and son of the president of Equatorial Guinea, for having made an impressive heritage in France, estimated at tens of billions of FCFA with public money from Equatorial Guinea. In addition to the arrest warrant against Teodorin Obiang, the French justice seized in 2012 a luxury hotel (4000 m2) located in Paris owned according to them, by the Obiang family.
After years of fruitless tussle, Equatorial Guinea decided to counter attack. She just appeal to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague to seek for a redress. Malabo wants the French justice to suspend the proceedings. First because Teodorin Obiang is vice president of his country and therefore enjoys immunity (not recognized by the Court of Cassation of France). Then and finally because according Malabo, the hotel is a property of the Equato-guinean State which housed its diplomatic representation.
The ICJ has considered the matter since 17 October 2016. The country of Teodoro Obiang is represented in this case by the Cameroonian lawyer Maurice Kamto. Asked by RFI (Radio France Internationale), the lawyer explained that this is “irreparable harm when we know that it is the premises of the diplomatic mission in Equatorial Guinea since attaining the building is likely to prejudice the sovereignty, honor and dignity of Equatorial Guinea, “he said.
