Jailed for four years, Marafa Hamidou Yaya has consistently claimed his innocence. His relatives believe that he is a victim of the fierce struggle for succession to Paul Biya at the top of the state, by the clutches of the regime.
Coincidence or not, it is a reality: Paul Eric Kingue, former Mayor of Njombe-Penja, Titus Edzoa, former baron of the regime for 34 years and his ex protege Michel Thierry Atangana, incarcerated for years due to accusations of financial improprieties they have always denied, have been released in the aftermath of pressure on the government by the Council of Human rights of the UN. At the end of its investigations, the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations, had stated that the figures cited above, were arbitrarily detained and paid the price for their political involvement.
This same Council Working Group of the UN Human Rights has returned to the charge to demand this time, the release of Marafa Hamidou Yaya, another former Baron of the interminable reign of Paul Biya, disgraced following accusations of embezzlement. Jailed for four years, Marafa Hamidou Yaya has consistently maintained his innocence. The United Nations agrees in one way or the other, that the former Minister Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic, is a political prisoner, and is arbitrarily detained.
The United Nations explains everything in the eight-page document published below:
